Joe Sutherland, Ph.D.

Biography
Dr. Sutherland is a noted technology executive, public service leader, and educator. His professional background includes executive roles at Amazon and Cisco, public service at The White House and academic appointments at Columbia University, Johns Hopkins University and Emory University. As the inaugural director of the Center for AI Learning, he promotes AI literacy through building community across Emory University and Atlanta.

Biography
Dr. Clifford Carrubba is a distinguished political scientist, educator, and thought leader. He is the director of the Centre for the Study of Law, Politics, and Economics and the founding director of the Department of Quantitative Theory and Methods. Dr. Carrubba continues to contribute to the academic community through his ongoing research and teaching in quantitative sciences and planning the strategic growth of the Center for AI Learning.

Tommy Ottolin
Tommy Ottolin joins us from Georgia Tech, where he recently earned his master's degree in Human-Computer Interaction. Before earning his master’s, he worked at Epic Systems, where he advised hospital executives on EHR implementation projects. He has worked for several musical AI startups, holding roles in UX and product strategy to discover new forms of fan engagement.

Danielle Williams joins the center from Emory’s Communications and Marketing team. As the previous Assistant Director of Media Relations, she developed and implemented media relations strategies that elevated Emory’s university priorities, including AI.Humanity and Student Flourishing. Danielle has a history of communications roles at publication & communications agencies.

Dr. McAlister co-directs the center's two largest experiential learning programs: AI.Data Lab and AI.Xperience. He is an AI enthusiast who helps guide and troubleshoot student projects while also helping project sponsors yield the most potential out of opportunities they bring to our center. His academic research exists at the intersection of formal models of political behavior, statistical modeling, and legislative behavior.

Dr. Bromberg coordinates the center’s faculty seminar series. Her research focuses on deciphering the DNA “blueprints” of life’s molecular machinery. She develops novel bioinformatics techniques to find out where this machinery comes from and why/how it runs. Her findings consistently indicate that our world functions via dependencies and interactions at all scales.

Christopher Yasko is a former senior vice president and chief data scientist at Equifax. He currently helps direct the technical architecture of our projects and collaborates with professors on how to yield further insights from research they provide to the center. With over thirty years of industry experience, he’s led a global teams that pioneered disruptive solutions utilizing machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Ashlee Gardner is the assistant director for strategic communications in the Office of the Provost. In this role, she supports marketing and communications for the AI.Humanity initiative and the Center for AI Learning. Her background includes communications work in higher education, nonprofit, and corporate organizations, as well as marketing and advertising agencies.

Her previous leadership roles in operations and administration at Emory built a strong foundation in organizational efficiency, cross-functional collaboration, and program development to advance the university’s mission at the intersection of technology and humanity.

Minnie Glymph is the assistant vice president for academic communications at Emory University. In support of efforts to create safe and trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has established the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (USAISI). To support this Institute, NIST has created the U.S. AI Safety Institute Consortium. The Consortium brings together more than 280 organizations to develop science-based and empirically backed guidelines and standards for AI measurement and policy, laying the foundation for AI safety across the world. Below are the members that represent Emory's Center for AI Learning in the Consortium.
